Pros And Cons Of Online Surveys

Online surveys are a very useful way of finding out the views held by people on specific issues. One main benefit of online surveys is that they are so easy to complete — users need not leave their desk to register their voice. Also, online surveys can be better targeted than manual surveying. If a firm or institution wishes to survey a particular section of society, they can place surveys and links to them at the online locations that such people are known to visit the most. Online surveys can also be very easily incentivized, or made more appealing to the user, if a prize draw or sum of money is put on offer, to be won by a randomly-selected user. A huge number of online users spend their online time entering competitions — online surveys can therefore become very attractive to such people.

There are, however, some drawbacks to online surveys. There are an increasing number of online surveys seeking users to complete their questions, meaning that web users could sometimes feel overwhelmed by the choice on offer and shy away from online surveys. Also, many online surveys seem overlong and not worth the user’s time, meaning they often go unfinished or inaccurately answered. Another negative association with online surveys is that of Spam e-mail. Many bulk-spammers, masquerading as legitimate purveyors of online surveys, send e-mail to users with false links to online surveys. These sometimes turn out to be infected with viruses, giving online surveys a bad name.
